Are insects safe to eat?

The eating of insects has been the focus of attention over the last few years. A mealworm or locust as a novel source of proteins. But, is it safe? The mealworm is the first insect to have been declared safe for consumption by the European Foods Safety Agency (EFSA) at the beginning of 2021. But, what about other edible insects?

There are approximately 2100 different insect species fit for human consumption. Insect meat has a nutritional value similar to that of regular meat. Insects multiply rapidly and require less food. Moreover, their greenhouse gas emissions are up to one hundred times lower than that of pigs or cows. Insects provide a sustainable and interesting solution to the world food issue.
